In the sixth episode of Japan Sinks: 2020 season 1 titled "An Oracle," the story further develops as the Muto family discovers that their friend Koichiro is missing. Ayumu and Haruo are in search of him but are unsuccessful since their cellphone signals are too weak to make any calls. Mari, on the other hand, has arrived in Odaiba where she meets two siblings, Kite, and Mira.
The episode starts with a scene of the siblings who are playing with their dog. Mari observes something about the dog that is not normal and realizes that animals are more aware of the oncoming disaster than humans. She also gets to know that Kite and Mira are oracle twins who can predict the future. As they walk towards the Shibaura Tunnel with the dog, they see debris floating by in the distance and feel the tremors of an earthquake. Mari, Kite, and Mira then witness the tunnel collapsing, and they run for safety.
Meanwhile, Ayumu and Haruo are reeling from the shock of their friend's disappearance. While trying to find Koichiro, they come across a park where they encounter an elderly resident who is digging a hole. The man tells them that he is digging for his safety and advises them to do the same. Ayumu and Haruo initially ignore the advice but later realize that they should follow the old man's lead. They start digging a hole for themselves, but they do not know what to do when they have to go back for supplies.
Mari, Kite, and Mira are rescued by a group of people who are building a barricade near the water's edge. The barricade is made of debris and plastic sheets to stop the water. This group of rescuers takes Mari, Kite, and Mira to their shelter where they meet a group of people planning to travel to a new island, where they can lead a better life.
The group lets Mari and her companions stay with them for the night. Mari decides to talk to Kite and Mira about their ability to predict the future. She learns that the twins are not like other people because they can see things that others cannot and have a connection with nature. Kite explains to Mari that humans are just one part of nature, and their survival is dependent on how well they can adjust and coexist with other elements of nature.
In the meantime, Ayumu and Haruo are still in the process of digging their hole. Their neighbor, Ms. Onodera, visits them and brings them some food. She tells them that she has decided to leave Japan and move to America with her son. Ms. Onodera hands Ayumu and Haruo a letter for her daughter, who is living in the United States.
The episode ends with Mari, Kite, and Mira waking up to the sounds of the barricade breaking, and water slowly entering the shelter. They gather their things and get ready to leave the shelter and make their way to higher ground. Ayumu and Haruo are still digging their hole, but they hear the sounds of the earthquake and realize that they need to act quickly if they want to survive.
