After years of waiting tables and dealing with her husband’s selfish behavior, Allison McRoberts (Annie Murphy) is finally fed up. In the series premiere of “Kevin Can F**K Himself,” titled “Living the Dream,” Allison decides to take control of her life and her marriage. She begins by impulsively buying a new car with money she’s saved up from her waitressing job, which sets off a chain of events that will change her relationship with her husband Kevin (Eric Petersen) forever.

Allison has spent her entire adult life putting Kevin’s needs before her own, but now she’s ready to live life on her own terms. As she drives her new car home, she’s beaming with excitement and a newfound sense of freedom. But her excitement is short-lived when she realizes that Kevin has invited his obnoxious friend Neil (Alex Bonifer) over for a night of heavy drinking and sports watching.

Allison’s attempts to enjoy her new car are thwarted by Kevin and Neil’s disrespectful behavior, and she’s left feeling isolated and unappreciated in her own home. But Allison is not one to be pushed around for long. As the night goes on, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

“Living the Dream” is a mixed-genre show, alternating between a sitcom and a dark drama. When Allison is alone, away from Kevin and his friends, the tone of the show shifts to a tense and brooding drama, hinting at the hidden depths of Allison’s emotions and thoughts. When Kevin is around, the show takes on the familiar sitcom vibe of a dopey husband and his nagging wife. The contrast between the two styles is jarring but extremely effective, making for a compelling viewing experience.

One of the most interesting aspects of “Kevin Can F**K Himself” is the way it subverts traditional gender roles. In the sitcom scenes, Kevin is portrayed as a stereotypical “guy’s guy” who’s only interested in beer, sports, and hanging out with his buddies. Allison, on the other hand, is relegated to the role of the dutiful wife who cleans up after her husband and puts up with his bad behavior. But in the drama scenes, we see a very different side of Allison. She’s angry and frustrated, simmering with resentment at her husband’s treatment of her. She’s a complex, multi-dimensional character, and it’s clear that there’s more going on beneath the surface than Kevin ever realizes.

“Living the Dream” is an intense and emotional episode that sets the stage for the rest of the series. We see Allison at a crossroads, struggling to balance the life she’s always known with the life she wants to lead. We see her assert herself in small but significant ways, taking control of her own finances and making decisions without consulting Kevin. And we see her begin to realize that her marriage may not be as perfect as she’s always assumed.

Annie Murphy gives a phenomenal performance as Allison, perfectly capturing the frustration and resentment simmering just beneath the surface. Eric Petersen is equally impressive as Kevin, a likable yet clueless character who’s blind to the pain he’s inflicting on his wife. The show also features a strong supporting cast, including Mary Hollis Inboden as Allison’s best friend Patty, who serves as Allison’s sounding board and confidante.

Overall, “Kevin Can F**K Himself” is a unique and innovative show that pushes the boundaries of traditional sitcoms. It’s a show that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking, offering a fresh perspective on marriage and gender roles. “Living the Dream” is an excellent first episode that sets the stage for what’s sure to be an exciting and unpredictable season.
