The show Knights of Sidonia is an anime series set in the distant future where humans have fled from Earth after it was destroyed by an alien race called Gauna. The remaining humans now live on a massive spaceship called Sidonia, and they're constantly under threat from the Gauna. In season 1 episode 12, titled Home, we see our main character, Nagate Tanikaze, finally return to Sidonia after his long battle against the Gauna.
The episode begins with Nagate and his team returning to Sidonia after successfully eliminating the Gauna responsible for destroying Earth. Despite their victory, the crew is mourning the loss of many of their comrades, and Nagate feels a sense of survivor's guilt that he didn't experience during the heat of battle. As soon as he disembarks from his spacecraft, he's greeted by his friends and colleagues, all of whom are relieved to see him back on board.
As Nagate walks through Sidonia, we see how much the crew has been affected by the recent battle. There are fewer people in the hallways, and those who are there look exhausted and defeated. Even Sidonia's leader, Captain Kobayashi, is feeling the weight of the loss. She pulls Nagate aside to debrief him on what he saw during his mission, hoping to gain any insights that will give Sidonia an edge against the Gauna in the inevitable battles to come.
Nagate's return home isn't all serious, though. He reunites with Izana, his "third gender" friend who has been pining for him all season. The two of them have a tender moment as they catch up on what's happened during Nagate's time away. While romance isn't the main focus of the show, it's clear that Nagate and Izana have a special connection.
But as Nagate tries to settle back into life on Sidonia, he can't help but feel restless. His experiences fighting the Gauna have changed him, and he struggles to integrate back into the routine of Sidonia life. When he overhears some of his fellow pilots talking about how they can't wait for the next battle, Nagate becomes angry. He feels like the crew is too eager to die in battle, and he hates how much death and destruction they've already suffered.
Nagate's frustration comes to a head when he's paired up with one of Sidonia's newer pilots, a brash young man named Kunato. During their training session, Nagate loses his temper and starts fighting Kunato in earnest. Kunato is clearly outmatched, and Nagate beats him until he's too injured to continue. Nagate's fellow pilots and leaders are horrified by his behavior, and he's immediately put on trial for his actions.
The trial serves as a moment of reckoning for Nagate. As he listens to his crewmates testify against him, he realizes how much he's changed during his time away from Sidonia. While he used to be a shy and reserved young man, he's now a battle-hardened warrior who has seen things that most of his fellow crewmembers can't even imagine. He also realizes that his anger stems from a deep fear that the crew of Sidonia isn't prepared for what's to come.
In the end, Nagate is found guilty of his actions, but is allowed to stay on as a pilot on probation. He apologizes to Kunato and makes amends with his other crewmates, but it's clear that things will never be the same for him on Sidonia. As the episode ends, Nagate looks out at the stars and wonders what other battles he'll have to fight before his time on Sidonia is done.
Overall, Home is a tense and emotional episode that serves as a turning point for Nagate and the crew of Sidonia. It's a reminder that war takes a toll on everyone, even those who are fighting on the winning side. As the show moves into its second season, it's clear that things will only get more intense for our heroes.
