Your most enjoyable activity will probably be strolling through artistically designed garden landscapes with their winding paths, tranquil ponds, stately trees, lush vegetation and traditional wooden temples. We also visit Inari and Tofukuji shrines.

Nanzen-Ji is a vast complex with numerous subtemples, gardens and shrines sprawling up the hillside, including another pebble garden, hiking trails, waterfalls and a mountain glen. Then we arrive at Maruyama Park, which has an enchanting pond encircled by beautiful landscaping with a picturesque foot-bridge in the center. We're now walking to Chion-in, another beautiful temple.

Most visitors to Kyoto are here to enjoy the temples, gardens and the historic sites but you'll also find that downtown Kyoto is very appealing. It's a busy modern shopping area that features a couple of major boulevards, several large department stores and smaller pedestrian-only streets, and there's many blocks of boutiques and restaurants, caf©s and thousands of local residents.

Kiyomizu-dera is the most popular temple in all of Kyoto. The main hall is the most spectacular single item here. It's up on large wooden stilts and designated as a national treasure. For the rest of this segment we have a different focus - we're going shopping on a very quaint and historic series of lanes just in front of Kyoto's most popular Temple.

Ginkaku-ji is one of the prettiest of all of the temples and gardens in Kyoto. It's another world, a lyrical dreamscape of ponds surrounded by gardens, dotted with statues and linked together by exquisite bamboo railings that guide you along the very pleasant and calm foot paths. Then we're taking a stroll on Philosophers Path and visit the Honen shrine gardens.
