In the opening episode of London Irish, we’re introduced to four twenty-something Irish friends living in London – Conor, Bronagh, Packy, and Niamh. The group is searching for wild nights and meaningful connections, but instead mostly encounters disappointment when it comes to both.

Conor is a bartender at a somewhat seedy joint, and spends most of his days hungover from the night before. He’s also obsessively in love with his ex-girlfriend, but can’t seem to make any progress with her. His best friends, Packy and Bronagh, are roommates whose hobbies include surfing and smoking weed. Bronagh is looking for love but coming up empty-handed, while Packy is in a casual relationship that he only half-heartedly wants to make more serious.

Niamh is the outlier of the group, working a corporate job and living a more put-together life than her friends. She’s frustrated by their lack of direction and love lives, but can’t quite bring herself to leave them behind.

The episode centers around the group’s attempts to find love and excitement. Conor is hopeful when his ex, Elaine, comes by the bar with her new boyfriend, but quickly realizes there’s no chance for them. Bronagh and Niamh go out to a club, where Bronagh catches the eye of a handsome but sleazy guy named Dylan. Packy, meanwhile, spends his evening getting high and drifting through a party, until he stumbles upon a surprise that shakes him out of his apathy.

London Irish sets up its premise effectively in this first episode, capturing the energy of a group of young people who are searching for something they haven’t found yet. The dialogue is snappy and frequently funny, even as the characters grapple with issues like heartbreak, loneliness, and ennui.

Conor is the clear protagonist of the show, and the episode does a strong job of establishing his central conflict – his obsession with Elaine, which is encouraging him to wallow in self-destructive behavior. The audience can immediately see that Conor’s love for Elaine is unhealthy and unlikely to be requited, but it’s clear that it will be driving much of the show’s drama.

Bronagh and Niamh are more thinly-drawn in this first episode, but their personalities come through in flashes. Bronagh is spunky and funny, while Niamh is more serious and put-together. Packy is the most underdeveloped of the group, but his stoned ramblings give a good sense of his general vibe.

The episode is shot in a way that feels appropriately grungy and youthful, with plenty of shots of the characters in various stages of drunkenness and dishevelment. The London setting is utilized effectively, giving a specific sense of place and culture to the show.

As a pilot, this episode does the necessary work of setting up the show’s premise and characters. While it lacks the emotional depth that later episodes will capture, it serves as an enjoyable introduction to the show’s world and characters. The humor is a strong point, with plenty of clever one-liners and comedic situations. Overall, “Pilot” is a promising start to the London Irish series.
