Lou Grant season 4 episode 16, titled "Campesinos," follows the struggles of a group of migrant farmworkers. When a young reporter, Sally, comes to Los Angeles seeking a job at the Los Angeles Tribune, Lou assigns her to investigate the working conditions of the farmworkers in Southern California. Sally teams up with a seasoned reporter, Art Donovan, who has been covering the topic for years, and they visit a farm in the San Joaquin Valley.

The farm belongs to a wealthy family, the Garcias, who have been accused of mistreating their workers. The Garcias insist that they treat their workers fairly, but Sally and Art quickly discover otherwise. The farmworkers, or campesinos, live in overcrowded and unsanitary housing, work long hours for low wages, and have limited access to healthcare. Furthermore, when a campesino becomes injured or sick, he is often fired without compensation.

Sally and Art meet with a group of campesinos, who share their personal stories. They discuss their struggles to provide for their families and explain that they have no choice but to work under such dire conditions. The farmworkers fear that if they speak out, they will lose their jobs and be unable to find work elsewhere. Despite this fear, the farmworkers decide to take a stand and fight for their rights.

Sally and Art publish a series of articles on the unfair treatment of the campesinos. The articles receive widespread attention and criticisms from both the public and the Garcias. The Garcias claim that the articles are one-sided and that they treat their workers well. Meanwhile, the public expresses sympathy for the campesinos and calls for change.

Lou and his colleagues at the Los Angeles Tribune join the fight for the campesinos. They organize a fundraiser to help the campesinos and offer them support. Sally and Art continue to report on the issue and share the stories of the campesinos. Meanwhile, the Garcias try to silence the campesinos by threatening to deport those who speak out.

As the story unfolds, the audience witnesses the rich complexities of the relationships between labor and management, as well as the role of the media in social change. The episode brings attention to the widespread problem of mistreatment of migrant farmworkers in the United States and depicts the courageous efforts of those who fight to raise awareness and affect change.
