Maggie is a heartwarming Hulu series that follows the story of a young woman named Maggie Hart, played by Rebecca Rittenhouse. Maggie is a charming and spirited woman who is determined to make the most out of life despite the obstacles she faces. She is a brilliant young woman, with a great job, and supportive friends, but she has one big secret that she’s been keeping from everyone: she suffers from a severe case of narcolepsy.
The series begins with Maggie just starting her new job as an assistant in a prestigious advertising agency in Los Angeles. She is excited to start this new chapter in her life, but the stress of the job along with her narcoleptic disorder begins to take a toll on her. It becomes clear that she is not coping well with sleeping during work hours and her colleagues and boss become increasingly concerned that she is not up to the task.
Despite this, Maggie is determined to prove herself and work hard to keep her job. Her loyal and supportive friends (played by David Del Rio and Nichole Sakura) offer her unconditional support and encouragement as she navigates the ups and downs of being a young professional living in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Along the way, Maggie is also aided by her trusty therapist Dr. Wilson, played by the talented Bobby Lee, who serves as both an emotional anchor and a source of guidance for her.
The early episodes of Maggie offer a glimpse into the everyday struggles that individuals with narcolepsy go through, and the way it affects their personal and professional lives. It also explores the complexities of mental health and the stigma attached to it, beautifully capturing the fear and shame that often accompanies those who suffer from invisible illnesses.
As the series progresses, we get to know Maggie and her friends better, discovering their quirks, aspirations, and fears. Maggie becomes smitten with a coworker, a charismatic art director named Ben (played by Christopher Meyer), who has seemingly perfect life. As Maggie's feelings for Ben grow, she is forced to reconcile her professional ambitions with her desire to find love and her need to take care of her health.
Maggie is a beautifully written and expertly executed series that manages to balance the comedic with the dramatic, creating moments of pure joy and heartbreak for the viewer. The show tackles a variety of issues, including disability, mental health, gender, and sexual identity, with sensitivity and nuance.
The standout performance of the series undoubtedly belongs to Rebecca Rittenhouse, who brings a warmth and vulnerability to Maggie that make her an instantly likable and relatable character. David Del Rio and Nichole Sakura also deliver knockout performances as Maggie's friends who serve as her family more than anything.
Overall, Maggie is a highly enjoyable and thought-provoking series that captures the beauty of human connection and perseverance in the face of adversity. It is a must-watch for anyone who has ever felt like an underdog and who refuses to give up on their dreams.
