Following the events of the previous episode, "For Pete's Sake," we find Luke in a much different headspace than we're used to seeing. After unsuccessfully attempting to track down some potentially game-changing evidence, he's become increasingly disillusioned with the idea of being a hero and is feeling emotionally overwhelmed by his responsibilities as Harlem's protector.
Meanwhile, Mariah's grip on the neighborhood has tightened, with her drug trade booming and her political ambitions becoming more and more realized. Shades is still by her side, but struggling with his love for her and his own growing realization that what they're doing is wrong.
One of the big developments in this episode is Tilda's sudden rise to power thanks to some timely advice from Misty. With an unlikely ally at her side, she decides to try to take down Mariah once and for all, but finds herself in over her head as she starts to realize just how destructive Mariah's hold on the community really is.
We also get to learn a bit more about Bushmaster's past and the origins of his powers, thanks to a twist that sees him seeking help from an old acquaintance. Despite his lingering anger toward Cage, he ultimately agrees to work with him in order to take down Mariah for good.
As always, the writing in this episode is top-notch, with plenty of well-crafted dialogue and character development to keep things interesting. There's a ton of tension building as the show edges ever closer to its season finale, and there are some truly shocking revelations that will have fans on the edge of their seats. If you're a fan of well-written, character-driven dramas with a dash of superhero action, then "The Main Ingredient" is definitely an episode you won't want to miss.
