Written by geek and pop culture darling, Joss Whedon and featuring the art of John Cassaday, Astonishing X-Men is notable for its independence from other X-Men titles and being relatively standalone. Whedon introduces many original characters in this series that have gone on to become full-fledged stars in their own right. The motion comic, Astonishing X-Men, tells the story of a group of mutants striving for recognition and acceptance from society. Removed from the X-Men you may have known as a kid, Astonishing X-Men is an updated, jumping-on point for anyone wanting to dive into the Marvel experience without previous knowledge. Main characters include Cyclops (Scott Summers), Emma Frost, Beast (Hank McCoy), Wolverine, and a grown-up Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde). Initially, Astonishing X-Men begins with the main group joining together to form a new superhero team as well as becoming professors at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters where Scott Summers and Emma Frost reside as co-headmasters. Many past prejudices exist between the team members and the chemistry isn't instant and natural. The team faces their first threat in a rousing and superheroic fashion against the alien warlord, Ord. On a more insidious level, it's revealed that the X-Men face a threat closer to home: the advent of a mutant cure. Causing the young mutant students at the school as well as even an integral member of the team to question themselves, this plot point drives the X-Men into an action that sets events into motion for the rest of the motion comic.
