Hawkeye, Trapper, and Frank are each trying to find a way to deal with an unknown sniper who's been attacking the 4077th. In the episode, the camp is on edge after a sniper has wounded three soldiers, including Radar, who was hit in the arm. The sniper is still out there, taking shots at the camp. When soldiers from another unit arrive to use the camp's facilities, one man is shot and killed. The camp's frustration and anxiety boil over, and everyone seems to have a different idea of how to deal with the situation. Frank is convinced that the sniper is a North Korean spy and wants to execute anyone who is acting suspiciously. Hawkeye and Trapper feel that the sniper is a soldier who is scared and traumatized, so they try to talk him down.

Meanwhile, tensions between the officers and enlisted men come to a head when Hawkeye demands that he be allowed to treat all of the wounded, regardless of rank, something that Frank and Colonel Blake object to. Hawkeye points out that in a crisis, they need to put aside their differences and work together as a team. The same applies to the situation with the sniper.

Throughout the episode, we get glimpses of the sniper's perspective, as he hides in the woods and takes aim at the camp. We see that he's a young, scared soldier who's been traumatized by the war. He's not a spy or a villain; he's just a man pushed to the brink by the horrors of combat.

As the day wears on, tensions continue to escalate. Frank becomes more and more aggressive, insisting that they take extreme measures to flush out the sniper. Hawkeye and Trapper continue to try and talk the sniper down, eventually convincing him to give himself up. In the end, the sniper is revealed to be a young soldier from a nearby unit who had been pushed to his limits by the horrors of the war.

The Sniper is a tense, haunting episode that explores the effects of war on the human psyche. Through the characters' reactions and the sniper's perspective, we see how fear and trauma can drive people to do terrible things. At the same time, the episode also shows how individuals can find compassion and empathy even in the midst of a conflict, and how people can come together to overcome adversity. It's a powerful and thought-provoking episode that showcases the depth and complexity of the show's characters and themes.
