As a language teacher, Mr. Jeremy Brown faces quite a challenge in his first class at an adult education center in London. He has been assigned to teach the English language to a group of culturally diverse students from all over the world. The students are excited about the opportunity to learn English. However, their lack of understanding of the language makes it a daunting task for Mr. Brown. The first episode of Mind Your Language, titled "The First Lesson," introduces viewers to the main protagonists and the situations that surround their daily lives.

Mr. Brown has come directly from school and is unprepared for the challenges of teaching adults. However, when he discovers that his new position comes with a significant salary increase, he is excited to take up the challenge. He walks into his new classroom with an air of authority and is greeted with a barrage of unfamiliar languages. Although he is initially intimidated, he tries to be open and welcoming to all his students.

Mr. Brown tries to set linguistic boundaries with his students as soon as he enters the classroom. He makes himself clear that English is to be spoken at all times during his class, even to other students who may share the same mother tongue. However, the message doesn't seem to reach the students as they struggle to understand the principal. Mr. Brown introduces his pupils one by one, and he is surprised by the diversity of nationalities represented.

These include the energetic and vivacious Italian, Giovanni; the miserly Pakistani businessman, Ali; the Chinese laundryman, Wang; the arrogant Spanish aristocrat, Juan; the Swedish bombshell, Ingrid; and the African princess, Princess, who insists on being addressed as “Your Highness,” even though she is in a language class. Mr. Brown's first lesson is a humorous exercise in language and communication as he tries to teach basic English words, phrases, and idioms, and the students struggle to understand.

In addition to teaching English, Mr. Brown also seems to be teaching culture. The students' cultural backgrounds and perceptions of social hierarchies frequently collide. In one instance, when two Muslim students, Ali and Mohamed, are conversing in Urdu during their lesson, Giovanni tries to join the conversation, thinking it had something to do with wine, which is forbidden in Islam. Ali, however, corrects him, and the matter is cleared up. It highlights the need for the students to be free to share their cultural differences without judgment.

The classroom dynamics are largely dictated by the students' contrasting personalities. Ali is tight-fisted, while Juan is pretentious and often dismisses Mr. Brown's instructions. Even though His Highness is initially dismissive of the other students, she eventually finds her place in the class and contributes to the lesson. Meanwhile, Wang is constantly interrupting, and it seems as if he is creating his rules. As a result of these varying behaviors, the class is usually chaotic during lessons, and Mr. Brown must constantly keep them in line.

The classroom in "The First Lesson" doesn't seem to be different from any other. It is what happens outside the class that illustrates how different cultures are apparent in daily life. Wang, for instance, owns a Chinese takeaway and has that high-pitched accent. Juan is a product of a rich Spanish family that has left him feeling entitled. Princess is a royal from Africa and doesn't understand why she should wait for others to start eating when she eats at her command. Mr. Brown realizes how diverse the world is and acknowledges that the one thing they share is the need to learn English.

In conclusion, the first episode of Mind Your Language season 1, The First Lesson, introduces viewers to a fascinating world of a language teacher in a culturally diverse classroom and the challenges he faces. The show's witty humor and the colorful cast of characters provide viewers with a glimpse into the daily life of London's diverse community, its customs, and culture. The episode offers a wholesome experience for viewers interested in both entertainment and education. It's an excellent start to an exceptional series that is both informative and amusing.
