Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area is a spin-off of the original Spanish series La Casa de Papel, but set in Korea. The show was co-produced by Netflix and BH Entertainment and released in 2022. The Korean version stars Yoo Ji-tae, Yunjin Kim, and Jeon Jong-seo in lead roles.
The show follows a group of eight talented criminals who come together to carry out an elaborate plan to rob the Bank of Korea. Their aim is to steal as many gold bars as possible worth billions of dollars. However, the heist is not just about stealing money; the group has a larger purpose, to break into the United Nations treasury to take back the stolen national treasures of Korea that were taken during several wars. The team names the operation "Joint Economic Area," and begins its planning.
The leader of the team is named "The Professor," portrayed by Yoo Ji-tae. He is a genius strategist who has planned and executed many successful heists. He recruits seven other skilled criminals to his team and assigns them roles that suit their respective strengths. The other members of the team are Hong Do-min (Kim Yunjin), a former intelligence agent; Hwang Wan-sun (Jeon Jong-seo), a hacker; Kim Han-sol (Kim Sung-oh), a thief; Yang Min-jun (Park Hae-soo), a swindler; Lee Jung-woo (Kim Ji-hun), a forger; Kwon Dae-young (Jang Yoon-ju), a spy; and Choi Ji-hoon (Lee Joo-shil), a trickster.
The show's plot follows the team through a series of intricate plans and daring escapes as they attempt to pull off the heist. They enter the Bank of Korea disguised as construction workers, taking hostages and locking themselves in the heavily secured vault with the gold bars. Meanwhile, the police and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) are alerted to the situation and begin trying to negotiate with the criminals. The situation becomes even more complicated when The Professor's younger brother, CEO of a prominent local IT firm, is taken hostage, and the police are watching his every move.
The show is full of intense action sequences, tense negotiations, and heart-stopping moments. The audience is kept on the edge of their seats, wondering whether the team will be able to pull off this daring heist. Every team member has their own individual story, and their motivations for joining the heist are revealed throughout the show, adding another layer of intrigue and depth to the plot.
