Mr. Corman is a 10-episode series created by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who also stars in the show as Josh Corman, a 30-something teacher in the San Fernando Valley. Season 1 episode 1, titled "Good Luck", introduces Josh as a struggling musician and loner who is facing the harsh realities of adulthood. He is no longer living with his girlfriend and spends his nights isolated in his messy apartment, drinking, and smoking weed.
Josh is also dealing with anxiety and depression that has taken a toll on him hard. His attempt at therapy proves disastrous when he fails to articulate his feelings to the therapist. The opening scene sets the tone for the entire episode as Josh is seen vomiting in his classroom. The students are already aware of his situation and offer to help him. But Josh is too much of a loner to accept their aid.
In the meantime, he heads to a bar to blow off steam, where he meets Victor, a friendly bartender. Josh gets carried away and tells Victor how he's feeling which leads him to offer Josh advice about moving forward from his depression. Victor becomes an instant friend who Josh is able to open up to but Josh still is isolated from the world.
The episode takes a sharp turn when Josh's high school friend Craig comes over and tells him they're performing at a benefit concert for a girl who lost her father. Josh hasn't spoken to Craig in years, and even though he initially refuses, Josh suddenly finds himself curious about the life his old friend has built for himself.
The night of the concert, Josh discovers the life Craig has moved on to, while he himself hasn't been able to move forward after experiencing a failure in his music career. The audience at the concert is mostly made up of elderly residents, leaving Josh feeling out of place. Even Craig's wife and newborn daughter disappear after the concert, reflecting how tighter Craig's entire life is.
Watching Craig, Josh realizes he's jealous of his friend's stability and happiness. He realizes that he wants to find someone who loves him and wants to share his life with him. The episode ends with Josh scrolling on a dating app and arranging a date for the next day.
Overall, the first episode of Mr. Corman sets the show's tone as a deeply personal portrayal of a struggling man trying to find his place in the world. Joseph Gordon-Levitt delivers an impressive performance as Josh, giving audiences a glimpse into a character that is nuanced and sympathetic.
The show explores themes of mental health, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and the importance of human connection. Mr. Corman delves into the psyche of a generation of young adults who are struggling with the pressures of adulthood in a world that is rapidly changing, providing a realistic representation of the difficulties that many are facing in today's society.
