Based on the novel by Stephen King, "Mr. Mercedes" season 1 episode 1, titled "Pilot," sets the stage for a gripping psychological thriller. The series opens with a haunting scene of a group of job seekers waiting in line outside a job fair in the early hours of the morning. Suddenly, a lone Mercedes SL500 emerges from the darkness, accelerating towards the unsuspecting crowd.

The driver, whose face remains unseen, plows into the defenseless group, killing eight people and injuring countless others. The scene is graphic and intense, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer.

Cut to three years later, and we're introduced to Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson), a retired detective who is struggling to find meaning in his life since leaving the force. He spends his days drinking and watching TV, haunted by the tragic case that he couldn't solve: the Mercedes Massacre.

Bill is a complex and flawed character, which makes him compelling to watch. Gleeson's portrayal of the troubled detective is nuanced and understated, drawing the viewer into his inner turmoil.

We're also introduced to a mysterious figure, Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadaway), a socially awkward and disturbed young man who works at an electronics store. It's clear from the outset that there's something off about Brady, and Treadaway's performance is both unsettling and captivating.

As the episode progresses, we see the beginnings of a cat-and-mouse game between Bill and Brady. Bill receives a taunting letter from the Mercedes Killer, which rekindles his desire for justice. Brady, meanwhile, becomes increasingly obsessed with his murderous past and begins to plan his next move.

The tension is palpable as the two men come closer and closer to a collision course. The slow burn of the episode is effective in building suspense, leaving the viewer on edge and eager to see what will happen next.

In addition to the main characters, we're also introduced to Bill's neighbor, Ida Silver (Holland Taylor), a quirky and lovable woman who provides some much-needed comic relief. We also get a glimpse into the personal lives of both Bill and Brady, giving us a fuller understanding of their motivations.

The show's dark and moody atmosphere is enhanced by the excellent cinematography and haunting musical score. The visuals are often bleak and foreboding, emphasizing the sense of impending danger that permeates the story.

Overall, "Mr. Mercedes" season 1 episode 1 is a strong start to what promises to be a gripping and intense series. The characters are well-developed, the acting is top-notch, and the story is intriguing and suspenseful. Fans of Stephen King's work and psychological thrillers in general will not be disappointed.
