Lee (Lee Mack) has been selected to be the best man at his friend Toby's (Hugh Dennis) wedding, and he is given the task of preparing the speech. However, he is not confident about his writing or public speaking skills, so he tries to get out of it by lying about having laryngitis. His girlfriend, Lucy (Sally Bretton), is suspicious of his behavior and decides to investigate.
Meanwhile, Lee's friend Tim (Tim Vine) comes over to help him write the speech. Tim is an expert at puns and wordplay, but his jokes fall flat with Lee and he becomes frustrated. Eventually, Lee comes up with his own speech, but he is still nervous about delivering it.
On the day of the wedding, Lee's nerves get the best of him and he gets drunk before giving his speech. He slurs his words and makes inappropriate jokes, embarrassing himself and Toby's fiancée. The wedding guests are shocked, and Toby is angry with Lee for ruining his special day.
After the wedding, Lee tries to make amends with Toby by buying him a present. However, Toby is still upset and tells Lee that their friendship is over. Meanwhile, Lucy confronts Lee about lying to her and pressures him into admitting the truth. She is disappointed but forgives him.
In the end, Lee realizes that he needs to work on his public speaking skills and apologizes to Toby for his behavior. Toby forgives him, and they make up. The episode ends with Lee practicing his speech for Lucy and Tim, who both offer him encouraging feedback.
Overall, "Speech" is a humorous episode that explores themes of friendship, honesty, and public speaking anxiety. Lee's bumbling attempts to write and deliver a wedding speech are relatable and entertaining, and the episode's conclusion offers a message of redemption and growth. Fans of Not Going Out will enjoy this episode's blend of witty wordplay and silly slapstick comedy.
