In Outlander season 3 episode 2, titled "Surrender," viewers are taken on a journey through time as they witness Jamie Fraser's experiences as a prisoner of the English Crown. The episode opens with Jamie living in a cave, trying to escape their notice, and struggling to survive. His only companionship comes from his dreams of his life with Claire and their daughter in the 20th century. However, fate has something different in store for Jamie as he is discovered by a band of local Scots, who bring him under their protection.

Jamie is not used to relying on others and feels like a burden, but he gradually warms up to the members of the group and begins to help them with their daily chores. In return, they teach him how to survive in the wild and how to fight with the sword.

The episode takes a somber turn as viewers learn about Jamie's past, including how Jamie survived the Battle of Culloden and the events immediately following it, which led to his capture. They also get a glimpse of Jamie’s years in prison under the custody of British Lieutenant Foster. Jamie is a prisoner of war, and during his stay with Foster, he is forced to work and is beaten mercilessly.

As the episode progresses, there are flashbacks to the past, where we see Claire, Frank, and Brianna adapting to their new life in 1960s Boston. Claire continues to struggle with the loss of Jamie and tries to be content with her current life. However, she can't help but miss Jamie and thinks about him every day.

Meanwhile, Brianna is growing up and becomes more and more curious about her father. She pesters Claire with endless questions about him, but Claire is hesitant to reveal the truth about her true past.

Back in the 18th century, Jamie's days as a prisoner are cut short when the brothers he has been living with get arrested for having illegal weapons. They urge Jamie to flee to the north and find refuge with their brother, who is also a Jacobite. In an act of selflessness, Jamie agrees to take the blame for the weapons and surrenders himself to the English, who throw him into prison once more.

The episode ends with Jamie in prison, with a deep sense of despair and hopelessness. He is visibly shaken and emotional as he thinks of his loved ones and the events that led him to this place.

In conclusion, Outlander season 3 episode 2, "Surrender," is an emotional and heart-wrenching episode that delves into Jamie's past and gives viewers a glimpse of how he ended up in the situation he's in now. The episode also shows how Claire and Brianna are adapting to their new life without Jamie and how their lives are interconnected even though they are separated by centuries.
