Q: Into the Storm is an investigative documentary series that explores the world of QAnon, a far-right conspiracy theory that started online and gained traction in the American political scene in 2017. The first episode of the series, titled "Calm Before the Storm," sets up the story by introducing us to the main players involved in the creation and spread of QAnon.
The episode begins with footage of the 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists and neo-Nazis marched through the streets. We then meet Fredrick Brennan, the creator of 8chan, an imageboard website that became a hub for QAnon followers. Brennan explains how 8chan became a place where people could post anonymous messages and images without fear of censorship, attracting a wide range of extremist groups and ideologies.
We also meet Jim Watkins, the owner of 8chan. Watkins, who is originally from the United States but now lives in the Philippines, bought the website from its original owner in 2015 and quickly became entwined with the community there. Watkins describes himself as a free speech advocate and a defender of the First Amendment, but his critics see him as a conduit for hate speech and dangerous ideas.
The episode then turns to the mysterious figure behind QAnon, simply known as "Q." Q's posts on 8chan, which often include bizarre predictions about world events and hints about an impending "storm" that will bring down the political establishment, have attracted a devoted following of believers who see Q as a sort of prophet. We hear from several QAnon followers who explain their beliefs and how they became involved in the movement.
One of the more interesting characters we meet in this episode is Ron Watkins, Jim's son and the administrator of 8chan (although he denies having any connection to Q). Ron is an enigmatic figure who speaks in cryptic language and often seems amused by the chaos that surrounds him. He says that he doesn't necessarily believe in the ideas espoused by QAnon, but he thinks it's important to allow people to have a space to discuss them freely.
As the episode progresses, we get a sense of the fear and paranoia that permeates the QAnon world. We see footage of rallies and demonstrations where QAnon believers show up carrying signs referencing "pedophiles" and other sinister forces that they believe are controlling the world. We also hear from people who have been directly affected by the movement, such as a pizza shop owner who was falsely accused of being part of a child sex ring by QAnon followers (a conspiracy theory known as "Pizzagate").
The episode ends on a tense note, with a cliffhanger that suggests that the world of QAnon is about to get even more dangerous and unpredictable. "Calm Before the Storm" is a compelling introduction to the series and a sobering look at a movement that has gained a disturbing amount of momentum in recent years. It sets up a number of questions that we can hope will be answered in the coming episodes: Who is Q? What motivates the people behind 8chan and QAnon? And what impact will this movement have on American politics and society as a whole?
