In the third episode of the first season of Quiz, the drama continues to unfold as the trial of Charles Ingram (Matthew Macfadyen) commences.

The episode begins with the prosecution presenting their opening statements. Prosecuting barrister Sonia Woodley QC (Aisling Bea) argues that the evidence is overwhelming and that Ingram, along with his wife Diana and co-conspirator Tecwen Whittock, deliberately cheated their way to the top prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Woodley goes on to present various pieces of evidence, such as the coughing pattern during Ingram's appearance on the show and the similarity of the coughs to those made by Whittock. The evidence is enough to convince the judge to proceed with the trial.

Throughout the episode, the defence begins to build their case. They argue that there is simply not enough evidence to suggest that the Ingrams and Whittock colluded to cheat their way to the top prize. Defense barrister David Spanton (Michael Jibson) argues that the CCTV footage shown as evidence is inconclusive and does not show any clear indication of cheating. He also points out that there were many coughs throughout the filming of the show, and that it is unfair to single out a few specific coughs as evidence of wrongdoing.

As the trial progresses, the viewer is given further insight into the lives of the Ingrams. Diana Ingram (Sian Clifford) is shown struggling with the pressure of the trial and the impact it has had on her family. Charles Ingram is portrayed as an unfortunate victim of circumstance, caught up in a situation he never intended to be in. Throughout the episode, it becomes clear that there is a great deal of tension between the couple, as Diana expresses doubts about Charles' innocence.

The media frenzy surrounding the trial is also depicted, with reporters camped outside the courthouse and the Ingrams' house. The couple is hounded by journalists, and it is evident that the pressure is starting to take its toll.

As the trial progresses, the audience is left to wonder whether or not the Ingrams and Whittock will be found guilty or acquitted. Will the prosecution be able to convince the judge of their case, or will the defence be successful in their efforts to prove the trio's innocence?

Overall, episode 3 of Quiz is a tense and dramatic instalment in the series. Through strong performances from the cast and expert direction, the viewer is given a compelling insight into the trial of Charles Ingram and the impact it had on those involved. Whether or not you know the outcome of the trial, this episode will keep you on the edge of your seat.
