Sage Vishwamitra takes Rama and Lakshmana to the kingdom of Janak in Mithila. King Janak is hosting a grand swayamvar (a ceremony where a princess chooses her suitor) for his daughter Sita and many princes have arrived from far and wide to win her hand in marriage. Rama and Lakshmana also participate in the swayamvar, where a daunting task is presented to the contestants - to string a massive bow that belonged to Lord Shiva, which none have been able to do so far.

Rama, however, effortlessly lifts and breaks the bow, much to the amazement of the spectators. As a result, Sita garlands Rama, choosing him as her husband. The wedding preparations begin, and Rama's family is invited to Mithila to attend the wedding. Meanwhile, Manthara, one of Kaikeyi's maids, convinces her that it is in her best interest to make Bharat, her son, the king instead of Rama.

Kaikeyi is manipulated into demanding that King Dasharatha keeps his promise to grant her two boons. Her first request is that Rama be exiled to the forest for fourteen years, and her second request is that Bharat be made the king instead. Dasharatha is heartbroken and falls sick at the thought of losing Rama. However, he agrees to keep his promise, as he is a man of his word.

Rama agrees to go into exile out of his love and loyalty towards his father. Sita and Lakshmana accompany him into the forest, leaving behind a distraught and regretful Bharat and a guilt-ridden Kaikeyi. While in the forest, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana encounter many challenges and obstacles, but they persevere with their unwavering faith in each other and the grace of the gods.

In this episode, we see the events leading up to Rama and Sita's wedding and the fateful request made by Kaikeyi that results in Rama's exile.
