In Reasonable Doubt season 1 episode 2, titled "Rivals in Love," the show follows high-profile criminal defense attorney Melissa Lewkowicz as she re-investigates a double murder case that resulted in a conviction over a decade ago.

The case revolves around the deaths of a young couple, Crystal Faye Todd and her boyfriend, Steven Todd. According to the prosecution's case, the couple was shot by Crystal's ex-boyfriend, Tommy Clark, who had become jealous of Crystal's relationship with Steven. Clark had reportedly threatened Crystal before, and after the murders, he was found with a weapon that matched the ballistics evidence found at the crime scene.

However, there were many inconsistencies in the evidence presented at the trial, and Melissa begins to delve deeper into the case to see if they missed anything during the initial investigation.

One of the key pieces of evidence that leads Melissa to pursue the case further is a camera found in Steven's home that was never submitted as evidence during the trial. The camera contains images of Crystal and Steven, as well as footage of an unknown man who appears to be casing the house. Melissa believes that this man could be the real killer and sets out to uncover his identity.

As Melissa begins to investigate, she discovers that there were other potential suspects in the case that were never fully explored by the police. She also finds out that Crystal's father was a known drug dealer and that Crystal may have been involved in illegal activities herself.

Adding to the complexity of the case, Melissa must navigate the relationships between Crystal's family members, who were divided in their beliefs about Tommy Clark's guilt. Notably, Crystal's mother still believes that Clark is innocent, while her father and stepmother are convinced of his guilt.

Throughout the episode, Melissa works tirelessly to gather new evidence, interview witnesses, and ultimately try to prove Tommy Clark's innocence. However, with so many potential suspects, conflicting testimonies, and buried evidence, Melissa faces an uphill battle in finding the true killer and getting her client exonerated.

In the end, "Rivals in Love" presents a compelling look at the justice system's potential pitfalls and highlights the importance of looking at all of the evidence in a case, even that which may have been previously overlooked.
