ReGenesis was a Canadian science-based action thriller based around a fictional agency responsible for investigating and removing threats to North America from bioterrorism and dubious scientific technology. The series was created by Christina Jennings and was a co-production between Canadian cable channels The Movie Network and Movie Central and Shaftesbury Films. Airing from 2004 to 2008 the show was produced for four seasons of 13 one-hour episodes in each season; despite being a work of fiction the majority of the shows used science that was either already available or being developed that could pose a threat to North America. To ensure the science contained in the show was accurate, the producers employed Canadian scientist Alec Edwards as the scientific advisor on the scripts of ReGenesis. The world of ReGenesis is populated by scientists working for a fictional agency created by the U.S., Canadian and Mexican governments to investigate and determine the threat posed by bioterrorism. The scientists of the North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission, also known as NorBAC operates from a lab in Toronto and is headed by microbiologist David Sandstrom, played by Peter Outerbridge, who is in charge of a team of scientists that often change at the beginning of each season. Each episode contains a stand-alone story based on a piece of popular science that poses a threat to the people of North America; the scientists investigate the threat posed by a terrorist threat or work of a rogue nation before deciding on the best course of action to counter the threat. The show uses locations in Canada to substitute for locations across North America and uses characters assigned to different North American governments to spread the stories told across the U.S., Mexico and Canada. ReGenesis tackles difficult subjects facing the ethical choices made by scientists who are involved in researching and developing new technologies. In many cases, particularly through the character of Sandstrom the moral questions of science are discussed in the show.
