After successfully setting Chad and Matty on fire in the previous episode, Doris, aka Katherine Harlow (played by Abigail Spencer) awakens in a strange place with a young boy named Ethan. As she starts to piece together her surroundings, she realizes that she’s in a safe house. A woman named Burtie (played by Lea DeLaria) who seems to be a caretaker of sorts, informs her that they found her close to death and brought her to the safe house.
Doris is still feeling the effects from the attack and starts to see flashes of Chad and Matty. Ethan, who’s also staying at the safe house, tries to cheer her up by showing her around and introducing her to the other residents. She learns that they’re part of a group called the Banished Brawlers, who’ve been cast out of their respective organizations.
Meanwhile, in the town where Doris was last seen, the Dredges are looking for her. The Dredge brothers, led by the cunning and cold-blooded Burt, played masterfully by Rory Cochrane, aggressively question anyone who’s seen Doris. They’re convinced that she’s the cause of their recent troubles.
As Doris continues to recover, she grows closer to Ethan and the other residents of the safe house. She starts to believe that maybe this could be a new beginning for her. But the peace is short-lived. Burtie senses something is off and warns Doris to be careful. Burtie tells her that the group isn’t as united as it seems and that there’s a power struggle within the ranks.
As the episode progresses, we’re introduced to more of Burtie’s backstory, which gives us a glimpse into why and how she got to where she is. We learn that she was once a part of a different organization that she left after her partner died. It’s clear that Burtie has gone through her share of pain and suffering, and it’s made her cautious, but also fiercely loyal to the residents of the safe house.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the Dredge brothers seem to have found the safe house. The tension builds as we see Doris realize that she’s no longer alone in this fight. She’s found a new family, and they’ll do anything to protect her.
Reprisal season one episode two is a continuation of the compelling and intriguing story that episode one laid the foundation for. It keeps us invested in the characters, their backstories, and their motivations. The performances by the actors are top-notch, and the cinematography is beautiful. The tension between the different groups is palpable, and you can’t help but root for the residents of the safe house. Overall, it’s an excellent episode that leaves you wanting more.
