Subaru awakens to find himself lying on the floor of Roswaal's mansion. He is in a dazed state and slowly realizes that he has returned from the dead yet again. Roaming the halls, he discovers that the timeline has been reset to before the White Whale attacked. Terrified that he will forget everything, he searches for Rem and asks her a series of questions in the hopes that his memories will start to resurface. After gathering some information, he returns to Emilia's side and tries to figure out how to best use his foreknowledge to prevent everyone from perishing during the next attack.

Subaru and the others travel to the capital to attend a royal selection event hosted by the royal dragon. In an effort to forge alliances with the candidates, Subaru takes it upon himself to become their mediator and help smooth over any conflicts that arise. Meanwhile, Emilia finds herself in a compromising position when a key piece of evidence linking her to the witch is discovered. As she struggles to maintain her innocence, Subaru gathers more information and attempts to clear her name. With all the chaos going on, it seems as though there may be no hope for them, but Subaru refuses to give up.

At the end of the day, Subaru finds himself alone and exhausted. He wanders the streets, thinking about his failures and the people he couldn't save. But just as he is about to give up, he is approached by a mysterious woman who introduces herself as Satella, the witch of envy. She offers to help him change his fate and save Emilia, but Subaru is hesitant to trust her. Despite his reservations, Satella promises to be his ally and offers him a way to cheat death. With nothing left to lose, Subaru accepts her offer.
