Rose and Maloney, a British crime drama series, revolves around two detectives, Rose Linden (Sarah Lancashire) and Marion Maloney (Phil Davis). In the first episode, titled Pilot: Part 1, we are introduced to the formidable pair who work for the fictional Criminal Justice Review Agency (CJRA). The episode begins with Rose and Maloney being assigned to investigate a case that has been closed for over 20 years. They are tasked with reviewing the case files and gathering new evidence to determine whether the accused, Stephen Warrington, was rightfully convicted of the murder of his wife.
The two detectives are very different in their approach to their work. Rose is more methodical and meticulous, while Maloney is a bit more laid back and streetwise. Despite their differences, they share a mutual respect for one another based on their years of experience in the field.
As they begin to dig into the case, they quickly realize that the case may not be as cut and dry as it had been portrayed in the trial. There are a few key pieces of evidence that had been overlooked, and a few witness statements that had not been fully explored. The detectives begin to re-interview witnesses and track down leads to uncover new evidence.
The case takes a personal turn for Rose, as she begins to uncover evidence that points towards her own ex-husband being involved in the case. She is torn between her duty as a detective and her personal feelings towards the case. This conflict adds a layer of intrigue to the storyline, as the audience is left wondering what Rose will do with this information.
Meanwhile, Maloney strikes up a friendship with a young man, Jake, who lives in the same block of flats as him. Jake is involved in a local gang and has a bit of a troubled past. Maloney sees something of a kindred spirit in Jake, and begins to mentor him in his own way. This subplot serves to underscore Maloney's character, who is shown to be a bit more empathetic and humane than his gruff exterior would suggest.
As the case progresses, the detectives uncover a number of secrets and lies that had been buried for decades. The real killer is someone that they had never suspected, and had been hiding in plain sight all along. The audience is left with a sense of satisfaction as the detectives bring the real killer to justice, but also with a few cliffhangers that will carry over to the next episode.
Overall, Pilot: Part 1 is a solid introduction to the world of Rose and Maloney. The two detectives are well-drawn characters, and the storyline is engaging with just the right amount of suspense. The episode sets up a number of storylines that will carry over to the rest of the season, and leaves the audience wanting more.
