As a young girl, Sabrina Spellman was orphaned after her parents died in a tragic accident. She now lives with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda, who are also witches, and her black cat, Salem. As her sixteenth birthday approaches, Sabrina faces a life-changing decision. She must choose between embracing her emerging powers and joining the Church of Night, a coven of witches her family has sworn loyalty to for generations, or staying true to her mortal life and leaving the world of magic behind forever.

The episode begins with Sabrina and her boyfriend, Harvey, walking through the woods, discussing her upcoming birthday. Sabrina shares her concerns about having to choose between her mortal life and her magical heritage. Harvey reassures her that she has plenty of time to decide.

At school, Sabrina's friend, Rosalind, tells her about a new club that is starting called WICCA, which stands for Women's Intersectional Cultural and Creative Association. Sabrina and Rosalind decide to attend the meeting, where they meet another new member, Susie, who shares her experiences of being bullied and harassed at school.

At home, Sabrina is practicing her magic when her aunts remind her of the importance of her upcoming decision. Sabrina expresses her desire to be both mortal and a witch, but her aunts tell her that it is impossible to successfully balance both worlds.

Later, Sabrina attends her family's annual meeting with the High Priest of the Church of Night, Father Blackwood. He tells her that she must sign the Book of the Beast, which would make her a full member of the coven and commit her to the Church of Night for life. Her aunts encourage her to sign the book, but Sabrina is hesitant. She asks for some time to consider her decision.

In the meantime, Sabrina decides to try and use her magic to help Susie deal with her bullies. She casts a spell that gives Susie the confidence to stand up for herself, but it also causes her bullies to experience terrifying hallucinations.

At the end of the episode, Sabrina attends a Halloween party with Harvey and her friends. She is approached by a member of the Church of Night, Madame Satan, who urges her to sign the Book of the Beast and embrace her true identity as a witch.

Overall, the first episode of Sabrina sets up the central conflict of the series: Sabrina's struggle to balance her mortal and magical lives.
