Scientific American Frontiers Season 8 Episode 2 Beyond Science?

  • November 19, 1997

In the second episode of season 8 of Scientific American Frontiers, titled "Beyond Science," host Alan Alda explores the cutting edge of scientific research and innovation that may seem beyond what we typically think of as science.

First, Alda visits a research lab that is studying the properties of light to create optical devices that can accomplish things like creating invisibility cloaks, self-healing materials, and more. He talks to the scientists behind this work to learn about what they're working on and how it could change the world.

Next, Alda explores the world of bio-inspired robotics, meeting with researchers who are creating robots that can move and act like animals, from snakes to salamanders. These robots are being used for everything from underwater exploration to creating prosthetics that are more intuitive for amputees to use.

Continuing the theme of "beyond science," Alda then dives into the topic of consciousness and whether or not machines will ever be able to truly be conscious beings. He talks to experts on both sides of the debate, exploring the history of artificial intelligence research and where the field is headed in the future.

Finally, Alda visits with a group of researchers who are using virtual reality to help people overcome phobias and fears. He talks to people who have gone through the program and come out the other side feeling more in control of their anxiety.

Throughout the episode, Alda asks questions and seeks to understand the driving forces behind these scientists' work. He discovers that, while none of this work is necessarily "beyond science," it is pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible and could have massive implications for the future of humanity.
