In the second episode of the first season of Seachange titled "Full Fathom Five," we see Laura Gibson, played by Sigrid Thornton, still trying to settle into Pearl Bay after relocating from the city with her children. Her attempts to become part of the community are not going as smoothly as she would have liked, but she is determined to make it work.
The episode starts with Laura attending her first town meeting, which is run by the town's mayor, Bob Jelly, played by John Howard. Bob is an affable, charismatic man who seems to be well-loved by most of the town's residents. However, Laura is hesitant to trust him, knowing that he played a significant role in her being sent to Pearl Bay.
During the meeting, Bob Jelly announces a plan to turn Pearl Bay into a tourist hotspot by building a marina, which would bring in a large amount of revenue for the town. While most of the town seemed to be behind the idea, Laura is worried that it would harm the environment and ruin the town's natural beauty.
Meanwhile, Laura's son, Rupert, played by Tom Long, is struggling to adjust to life in Pearl Bay. He is seen as an outsider and has a difficult time making friends. He spends most of his time alone, taking photographs of the town's sights.
The episode takes a turn when the local fishermen discover a sunken boat in the bay. The boat was once owned by the town's most famous resident, Max Connors, played by William McInnes. It is speculated that Max may have had something to do with the sinking of the boat, and he is taken into custody by the police.
Throughout the episode, we see Laura butting heads with Bob Jelly, as she tries to get him to see reason about the marina project. She also tries to get to the bottom of what happened to the sunken boat, believing that Max is innocent.
As the episode comes to a close, Max is released from custody, but not before Laura confronts him about his possible involvement in the sinking of the boat. Max denies any knowledge of what happened, and Laura is left unsure of what to believe.
Overall, "Full Fathom Five" is a compelling second episode that shows the difficulties of adjusting to a new community. It also highlights the tension between those who want to preserve the town's natural beauty and those who want to see it grow economically. The introduction of the sunken boat plot adds an exciting element to the show and gives the audience a glimpse of what is to come.
