The show Still Game is a Scottish sitcom that follows the lives of two elderly friends, Jack Jarvis (Ford Kiernan) and Victor McDade (Greg Hemphill), as they navigate their way through life in their wee country town of Craiglang. Season 1 episode 1, titled Flittin, kicks off the series by introducing us to these two lovable characters and their quirky group of friends.
The episode opens with Jack and Victor discussing the upcoming "flitting" party they're going to. A flitting is a Scottish tradition where someone moves from one house to another, and it's customary to have a party to mark the occasion. The boys are excited to attend the party of their old friends, the McCanns, who are moving to a new house in the same neighborhood.
As they're getting ready, we meet some of their other friends and neighbors, including Winston (Paul Riley), a lively old man who loves to gamble and always seems to be up for a good time, and Isa (Jane McCarry), a nosy neighbor who always has her ear to the ground and loves to gossip. We also briefly meet a few other characters, including Tam and Navid, who will become more prominent as the series progresses.
Once they arrive at the party, we see the McCanns' new home and meet some of their other guests, including a couple who are clearly having some marital issues and a young woman who catches Jack's eye. As the party gets going, we see Jack and Victor reminiscing about old times and enjoying themselves, while Winston and Isa are causing mischief and stirring up trouble.
As the night goes on, things take a turn when Jack and Victor discover that the McCanns don't actually own their new home – they're just renting it for a few months until their old home is ready to move back into. This leads to a good bit of chaos and hilarity, as the boys try to help the McCanns make the best of their temporary situation.
All in all, Flittin is a great introduction to the world of Still Game. It's funny, heartwarming, and has a certain charm that's unique to Scottish comedies. We get to know the main characters well and see their various quirks and foibles on display, while also getting a taste of the larger community they're a part of. It's a promising start to a series that will go on to become a beloved classic in Scottish television.
