In Street Science season 1 episode 5, titled "Fire Vortex," host Kevin Delaney and his team explore the science behind a phenomenon known as a fire vortex. By controlling the wind direction and speed, they are able to create a fire vortex. Next, the team travels to a burn pit to observe how different types of fuel can affect the size and intensity of a fire vortex. By adding ping pong balls to the fire, they are able to create a larger and more visible vortex than before.
In another experiment, Kevin and his team attempt to create a fire vortex using a homemade cannon. By igniting a propane mixture in the cannon, they generate a massive fireball that creates a small fire vortex. Kevin demonstrates how the velocity of the burning gases inside the cannon generates the rotation necessary to create the vortex.
Finally, Kevin and his team try something completely different by creating a fire vortex using sound waves. They set up a large speaker facing a fire pit and play a sequence of oscillating sound waves. To their surprise, they are able to generate a small fire vortex. Kevin explains that the sound waves create alternating areas of high and low pressure, which creates the necessary rotation to create the vortex.
