It is the early 1990s and high school is tough for 15-year-old Frankie Dunphy, but even tougher for his father Jack, who is suddenly without a job and forced to take on the role of stay-at-home dad. In the pilot episode of Surviving Jack, we meet the Dunphy family and witness the chaotic adjustment period as Jack tries to keep the household running smoothly while his wife, Joanne, continues to work as a nurse.

The episode opens with Frankie starting his first day of sophomore year, and it's clear he's not particularly popular. He's ignored by the cute girl he has a crush on and harassed by a group of bullies led by Carter, who has it out for him since he beat him at soccer tryouts. After causing a scene in the cafeteria, Frankie is sent to the principal's office where he realizes his father is there to pick him up.

Back at home, Jack is irritable and clearly not thrilled with his new stay-at-home dad role. He gruffly tells his wife he's not cut out for it and forcefully dismisses all of Frankie's problems. However, after spending the day with his son and seeing firsthand the struggles he's facing, Jack has a change of heart. Uncharacteristically, Jack becomes a supportive presence in Frankie's life, whether it's cheering him on at soccer practice or giving him heartfelt advice on how to handle a bully.

As Frankie adjusts to his new life, Jack continues to navigate his new role as a stay-at-home dad. He learns how to cook, clean, and manage the household, but he still struggles with balancing his new responsibilities with finding a job. We see glimpses of Jack's previous life as a successful doctor, and it's evident that he's having a hard time adjusting to being at home all the time.

Meanwhile, Joanne is juggling her job at the hospital with her responsibilities at home. She's grateful for Jack stepping up, but she's also worried about how he's coping with his new role. She knows he's not cut out for it and encourages him to find a job, but Jack is stubborn and reluctant to return to his old life.

As the episode concludes, Frankie's soccer team is in the championship game and Jack is determined to be there for his son. He misses his former life as a doctor and realizes he's not cut out for being a stay-at-home dad long-term, but he's finally realized how important it is to be there for his family. Despite a rocky start, Jack and Frankie are finally connecting and forming a strong bond.

Overall, the pilot episode of Surviving Jack sets up an intriguing premise for the series. It's a charming and humorous show that explores the ups and downs of family life and the challenges that come with adjusting to new roles and responsibilities. The characters are likable and relatable, and the setting of the early 1990s adds a layer of nostalgia and charm to the series.
