Kirito is a former beta tester of the Sword Art Online virtual reality MMORPG, and the only player to have ever escaped the game's deadly trap. After having been trapped in the game for two years, Kirito has long since returned to the real world and resumed his normal life. However, he remains curious about the future of virtual reality, particularly after learning of a new technology called the "Soul Translator" which is said to be capable of copying one's very consciousness into a virtual reality world.
