What is terrorism, and why does it occur? Although it affects our lives in countless ways, experts have had a difficult time defining terrorism. In Understanding Terrorism, students will explore the possible underlying motivations associated with acts of terror and examine many historical examples of how terrorists strike and who and what they target. Experts will explain the importance of and methodology for developing a "profile" of a modern terrorist. And, most importantly, students will increase their overall awareness of terrorism -- a form of violence that has been occurring for centuries. Part of the Terrorism in Our World Video Series. In Terrorism & The U.S., students will examine the history of terrorism in and against America, and the effects of terrorism on American society, politics and the economy. Students will also explore the double-edged sword of safety vs. civil liberties that has been the product of much debate in the United States in the post-September 11th era. From suicide bombings in the Middle East to persistent strikes in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, the battle against terrorism is a difficult confrontation against an often invisible enemy. In Preventing Terrorism, students will examine how intelligence agencies in many countries cooperate in an attempt to identify terrorists and their networks. Students will also learn about the many strategies government employs to try to prevent the loss of innocent lives and property, including increased security measures, the use of Special Forces and the use of diplomacy to further social and political change, as well as settle international disputes.
