The Art of Vintage follows design expert and collector, Alex Webster, as he travels to various homes in search of vintage treasures and shows homeowners how to incorporate them into their decor.

In season 1 episode 3, entitled "Wood Living Room Makeover," Alex visits a couple in a quaint suburban home looking to revamp their living room with a vintage touch. The couple, Rachel and Michael, have a love for mid-century modern design but are unsure how to integrate vintage pieces without overwhelming their space.

Upon arrival, Alex surveys the room and quickly identifies the main problem: the space lacks warmth and depth. The walls are painted a cool white, the floors are a light-colored wood, and there are no elements to ground the space. Alex's goal is to warm up the room by incorporating vintage wood pieces and add texture with an eclectic mix of decor.

The first step in Alex's design plan is to replace the sofa, which currently dominates the room and does not lend itself to a vintage aesthetic. He sources a classic mid-century wood frame sofa, which brings warmth and character to the space. Alex then uses vintage wood side tables to flank the sofa, adding height and depth to the room.

Next, Alex turns his attention to the mantle, which currently holds a hodgepodge of items, including seasonal decor and family photos. He removes everything and replaces it with a collection of vintage wood and brass candlesticks, old books, and a mid-century pottery vase filled with drying pampas grass. Alex also adds wood and brass sconces to either side of the mantle.

To add more texture to the space, Alex brings in a vintage wood rocker, placing it next to the side tables and sofa. He layers a mix of patterned pillows and throws on the rocker, creating a cozy nook in the corner of the room.

The final touches of the living room makeover involve adding organic elements and art to the walls. Alex hangs a large abstract painting above the sofa, which brings color and movement to the space. He also brings in a collection of vintage wood cutting boards, hanging them in a gallery wall next to the mantle. The cutting boards add warmth and texture to the white walls, as well as contribute to the vintage vibe.

Rachel and Michael are thrilled with the transformation of their living room. They never imagined that vintage wood pieces could add so much warmth and character to their home. Alex shows that vintage pieces can have a place in any home and can be incorporated in a way that fits seamlessly with any design style.
