The Count of Monte Cristo, based on the book by Alexandre Dumas, is a tale of romance, adventure and intrigue set in 19th century Europe. The story is about a young man, Edmond Dantes, who is framed for being a Napoleon sympathizer and conspirator. Edmond has two enemies unknown to him. Mondego is Edmond's romantic rival for the affections of Mercedes. Another is Edmond's second-in-command, Danglars, who believes he was passed over for a promotion Edmond received. Mondego and Danglers plot against Edmond, and they succeed in getting him sent to prison and put in solitary confinement.

The movie chronicles Edmond's incredible escape from prison with the help of a mysterious benefactor and how he uncovers, step-by-step, the plot that was put in place against him and why. Keeping his true identity a secret by using all methods of disguise, Edmond proceeds to extract revenge from his accusers and seeks to win back the love of his life.
