Dr. Richard Kimble continues his quest to prove his innocence of the murder of his wife, Helen, in the sixth episode of The Fugitive season 1, titled "A Lifeline." As he evades the relentless pursuit of Lt. Gerard, Kimble befriends a young boy named Joey who's hiding from his abusive stepfather.
Kimble hides out at a local diner where he offers to fix a broken jukebox for the owner, Patty. As he works on the jukebox, Joey sneaks in and sits down next to him, fascinated by the stranger. Kimble learns that Joey's stepfather, Frank, has been beating him and his mother relentlessly. Joey asks Kimble to help him leave town and escape Frank's abuse.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gerard arrives in town and questions Patty about Kimble's whereabouts. When she denies knowing anything, Lt. Gerard doesn't believe her and has his men keep an eye on the diner. Despite the danger, Kimble offers to help Joey escape with the aid of his girlfriend, Linda, who lives nearby.
As Kimble and Joey prepare to leave town, they are confronted by Frank who demands to know where Joey is hiding. Kimble tries to reason with Frank, but he becomes violent and attacks Kimble. A struggle ensues, and Kimble knocks Frank unconscious. Joey and Linda join Kimble as they flee the diner, but are interrupted by Lt. Gerard who has finally caught up with them.
A wild car chase ensues as Kimble, Joey, and Linda try to outrun the police. Kimble manages to pull ahead of the police by causing a pile-up on the highway, giving him and the others a chance to escape. They hide out in an abandoned building where Kimble phones a friend for help.
In the end, Kimble's friend arrives with a car and some money to help them continue their journey. Joey and his mother are put on a bus to start a new life, while Kimble and Linda go their separate ways. As Kimble watches the bus pull away, he's reminded once again of his own pursuit for freedom and justice.
"A Lifeline" is an action-packed episode that shows the lengths that Kimble will go to help others even as he's being hunted by the police. It also highlights the themes of abuse and trauma, as Joey and his mother are forced to leave town to escape Frank's violence. Overall, it's a great episode of The Fugitive that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
