In the opening episode of season 2 of HBO's critically acclaimed series The Leftovers, viewers are introduced to a new setting and a new narrative direction. Departing from the small-town setting of season 1, the action now takes place in the fictional town of Jarden, Texas, which has become known as "Miracle" due to the fact that no one disappeared there on the day of the Sudden Departure.

The episode primarily focuses on the Murphy family, who are Miracle locals and whose son, Evie, goes missing. Kevin Garvey, the protagonist of season 1, has relocated to Jarden with his family, and he becomes involved in the search for Evie. Alongside this central plot, there are a number of subplots and new characters introduced, including a female sheriff named John and a self-proclaimed prophet named Isaac.

The title of the episode, "Axis Mundi," refers to a concept found in many religious and mythological systems, which speaks to the idea of a central point connecting the heavens and the earth. This concept is explored in various ways throughout the episode, as characters try to make sense of their place in the world and their connection to something greater.

One of the most striking aspects of "Axis Mundi" is the visual style. The episode is directed by Mimi Leder, who also helmed the pilot of the series, and she brings a cinematic sensibility to the proceedings. The use of slow motion, vivid colors, and striking compositions creates a dreamlike quality that is both unsettling and beautiful. This style is particularly effective in conveying the sense of wonder and mystery that pervades Miracle, as well as the underlying tension that threatens to shatter the town's idyllic facade.

The performances in the episode are uniformly excellent. Justin Theroux, who was a standout in season 1, continues to impress as Kevin Garvey, delivering a nuanced portrayal of a man struggling to make sense of his life in the wake of the Departure. Carrie Coon, who plays Kevin's wife Nora, also shines in her scenes, infusing the role with a mix of vulnerability and resilience. The new cast members, especially Regina King as the steely and enigmatic John, hold their own against the established stars, making for a compelling ensemble.

While the episode does not provide many answers to the questions posed by the series' overarching mystery--namely, what caused the Departure and where did the departed go--it does move the story forward in intriguing ways. The introduction of Miracle as a key location and the focus on the Murphy family add new layers of complexity to the narrative, and the hints of supernatural phenomena suggest that the series is only going to get weirder and more fascinating.

Overall, "Axis Mundi" is a strong start to season 2 of The Leftovers. It builds on the themes and character dynamics established in season 1 while introducing fresh elements that keep the story from feeling stale. With its striking visuals, strong performances, and mysterious storyline, the episode sets the stage for what promises to be an engrossing new chapter in this singular and often unpredictable series.
