Ep 6. Certified

Kevin (Justin Theroux) continues his journey to fulfill his purpose in the latest episode of The Leftovers season 3 titled “Certified.” This time around, it’s all about the women in his life.

Kevin starts things off by visiting Nora (Carrie Coon) at her workplace, where he encounters her boss, who initially seems like an amiable fellow but quickly becomes confrontational. Things escalate, and Kevin is kicked out of the office. However, he finds a way to turn the situation around and ends up discussing his relationship with Nora with her boss.

While all this is going on, Nora's older brother, Mark (Lindsay Duncan), pays a visit and, predictably, brings some tension with him. Mark and Nora have a tumultuous history, and it's clear that things haven't been resolved between them. Mark is, in fact, a psychologist, but he doesn't seem very interested in helping Kevin, which is what he wants. Things come to a head when Nora discovers Kevin and Mark talking things out in the bathroom, and the two siblings have a climactic confrontation.

Meanwhile, Kevin's ex-wife, Laurie (Amy Brenneman), takes a major step in her life by informing Kevin that she has decided to take her own life before the seventh anniversary of the Departure. It was after Laurie lost her unborn child and her husband Kevin to another woman, Nora, that she decided to embrace the controversial Guilty Remnant movement and joined a cult-like organization. In an emotionally charged scene, she tells Kevin that she's planning on ending her life and leaving the world behind. Kevin is naturally horrified and tries to convince Laurie to reconsider, but Laurie remains adamant in her decision.

The episode ends with Kevin driving to Laurie's home, only to find that she has gone through with it. He arrives too late and is forced to face the reality that he will never see Laurie again. This revelation causes Kevin to reflect on his relationships with the women in his life and realize how much they mean to him.

Overall, "Certified" is an emotional episode that touches on themes of grief, loss, and mental illness. The female characters are given the spotlight, and the episode is all the better for it. The Leftovers season 3 continues to deliver some of the most thought-provoking and affecting television of recent times, and episode 6 is no exception.
