The Neighborhood season 4 episode 9, titled "Welcome to the Splurge," follows the Johnson family as they gear up to take part in their annual "splurge" day. Each year, the family sets aside a day to indulge in whatever it is they desire, no matter the cost. For patriarch Dave Johnson (played by Max Greenfield), who is always trying to save a dime, this is a difficult concept to embrace. However, his wife Gemma (Tichina Arnold), son Grover (Hank Greenspan), and daughter Tina (Beth Behrs) are thrilled at the opportunity to go all out.
The episode begins with the Johnsons waking up bright and early and heading out on their splurge day adventure. They start off at a fancy restaurant where they order the most expensive items on the menu, including caviar and Dom Perignon. Despite the price tag, the family is having a great time and Dave can't help but loosen up a bit. However, things take a turn when they get to their next splurge activity: a high-end spa.
At the spa, Gemma and Tina indulge in every luxurious treatment available, while Dave and Grover sit uncomfortably in the waiting area, surrounded by rich people. To make matters worse, the Johnsons soon realize that they have underestimated just how much their splurge day activities will cost, and they quickly blow through their budget. Desperate to make up the difference, Gemma suggests that they take on some odd jobs around the spa to earn some extra cash.
As the Johnsons scramble to make money, they run into their neighbors, the Butlers (played by Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears), who are also at the spa. The Butlers are there for a much different reason, as they won a spa day as part of a charity raffle. While the Johnsons are embarrassed to be working while the Butlers are relaxing, the two families bond over their shared experiences.
Ultimately, the Johnsons are able to scrape together enough money to pay for their splurge activities, and they leave the spa feeling exhausted but satisfied. On the way home, they reflect on the day and realize that while they may not have the same kind of wealth as some of their neighbors, they are rich in love and laughter.
Overall, "Welcome to the Splurge" is a lighthearted and funny episode that highlights the importance of taking time to indulge every once in a while. It also touches on themes of class differences and the pressure to keep up appearances in a wealthy neighborhood. Fans of The Neighborhood will appreciate the episode's comedic moments and heartwarming message.
