Chapter 6: Tennessee - Proverbs of The Underground Railroad season 1 follows the journey of the two protagonists, Cora and Caesar, as they arrive in Tennessee with the help of an abolitionist named Fletcher. While Cora is still grappling with the trauma of her past and the uncertainty of her future, Caesar is determined to find a way to live freely.

The episode opens with the pair hiding in a cramped, dark attic space, awaiting their turn to escape to the next leg of their journey. They are hiding with another runaway slave named Lovey, who is waiting to make her own escape. As they wait, Lovey tells them about her previous life on the plantation and her desire to start a new life in the North.

Once they arrive in Tennessee, Caesar and Cora are taken to Fletcher’s farm, where they are welcomed with open arms by the other runaways who have found refuge there. Fletcher is a kind and compassionate man who provides for his guests, but also demands that they work in return for their safety. The group must work hard to tend the farm, but they are also given time and space for rest and reflection.

Cora is still haunted by memories of her life on the plantation, as well as the trauma of the violence she has experienced. She is tormented by the idea that her mother, Mabel, abandoned her when she was just a child, and she struggles with feelings of anger and resentment towards her. Meanwhile, Caesar is focused on finding a job and a way to support himself as a freeman once they reach the North.

As the days pass, tensions begin to rise among the group of runaways, as they grapple with trust issues, fear, and uncertainty about what the future holds. Cora, who is still struggling to come to terms with her past, begins to find solace in the company of Royal, a young man who is also seeking refuge at Fletcher’s farm. Royal is kind, empathetic, and endlessly patient with Cora, and the two of them begin to form a deep connection.

As the episode progresses, we see Cora and Caesar encountering a number of obstacles and challenges, including the return of Ridgeway, the slave catcher who has been hunting Cora since her escape. The tension increases as they realize that they need to leave Tennessee as soon as possible, but they are uncertain of where they will go next.
