In "The Young Pope" season 1 episode 2, titled "Second Episode," we return to the Vatican where Pius XIII (Jude Law) is settling into his new role as the youngest pope in history. As the episode opens, we see the pope waking up in his lavish quarters while listening to Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins before starting his day.

Throughout the episode, we see Pius XIII's continued defiance and unpredictability as he becomes more comfortable in his position of power. He continues to resist the influence of the Vatican's politicians, including Secretary of State Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando) and Sister Mary (Diane Keaton), who both attempt to steer him in certain directions. Instead, Pius XIII prefers to chart his own course, even if it means rattling some cages and going against tradition.

One of the most striking scenes in this episode is Pius XIII's meeting with his predecessor, Pope Celestine V (played by veteran Italian actor Franco Pinelli). The conversation between the two popes is tense and cryptic, with each man hinting at hidden agendas and secrets that are not yet revealed. It's clear that Pius XIII has no intention of following in Celestine's footsteps and becoming a "pope emeritus" – he plans to be in charge until the day he dies.

Meanwhile, we see more of the Vatican's inner workings as Voiello tries to maneuver around Pius XIII's unpredictability. He works with Archbishop Kurtwell (Guy Boyd) to try and plant seeds of doubt and suspicion in the pope's mind, hoping to undermine his authority. We also see Sister Mary struggling to maintain her own authority within the Church as Pius XIII continues to push boundaries and challenge the status quo.

As with the first episode, "Second Episode" features stunning visuals and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. The show's writer and director, Paolo Sorrentino, continues to explore themes of power, religion, and morality through Pius XIII's complex character. We see moments of vulnerability, arrogance, and even tenderness as the pope grapples with the weight of his new responsibilities.

Overall, "The Young Pope" season 1 episode 2 is a compelling follow-up that builds on the promise of the premiere. With strong performances, gorgeous visuals, and a compelling storyline, it's clear that this show is one to watch for those interested in exploring the intersection of faith and power.
