Three Busy Debras is a surreal, mockumentary-style comedy series that centers around three suburban housewives all named Debra. The titular characters are played by creators and writers Sandy Honig, Mitra Jouhari, and Alyssa Stonoha.
In season 1, episode 6 titled Debspringa, the Debras decide to take a break from their everyday lives and go on a weekend retreat in the woods. The idea is suggested by Debra A, who claims to have undergone a similar experience during her rebellious youth. The other Debras are hesitant at first, but eventually agree to join her.
The episode begins with the Debras packing for their trip. They bring along all sorts of unnecessary items like a karaoke machine and a juicer, much to the annoyance of their designated driver and friend, Chris. While on the road, they sing along to cheesy pop songs and bicker over petty things, such as who sits in the front seat.
Upon arrival at the retreat center, the Debras are greeted by their guide, a crunchy granola type named Luna. Luna explains that the weekend will consist of various outdoor activities and mindfulness exercises. She also mentions that there is no wifi or cell service in the area, which causes the Debras to panic and argue over who forgot to pack a charger.
The first activity on the schedule is a nature walk, during which the Debras make fun of Luna's New Age beliefs and complain about the bugs. They also encounter a group of young Amish people who are on their own version of a "rumspringa" - a period of experimentation and indulgence before committing to their religious community. The Amish group and the Debras share snacks and stories, but quickly realize they have little in common and part ways.
Back at the retreat center, Luna leads a group meditation session which the Debras struggle to take seriously. They fidget and whisper to each other, and Debra C sneaks in a vape hit. Afterwards, Luna suggests they try "ecstatic dance", a free-form dance party meant to release inhibitions and reconnect with the body. The Debras are initially mortified at the thought of letting loose in front of strangers, but eventually give in.
The dance party sequence is one of the highlights of the episode, as the Debras let loose and perform a bizarre routine to an electronic beat. They make animal noises and flail their limbs in an awkward but endearing display of uninhibited fun. The scene ends with Luna and the Debras collapsing in a sweaty, exhausted heap.
The rest of the episode unfolds with a series of escalating, surreal and absurd incidents as the Debras start to lose their grip on reality. They hallucinate images of themselves in Amish clothing, they battle a group of sentient mushrooms who have been plucked from the forest, and they witness Luna transcend to another plane of existence.
Throughout it all, the Debras maintain their air of suburban ennui, even as they are confronted with increasingly bizarre and otherworldly challenges. They continue to bicker and make snarky comments at each other, even as they work together to navigate the strange new world around them.
By the end of the episode, the Debras are much worse for wear, physically and mentally. They have been pushed to their limits and beyond, and it shows. But they also seem to have found a newfound appreciation for each other and the world around them, even as it is revealed that Luna's retreat center is a front for a cult.
Debspringa is a standout episode of Three Busy Debras, showcasing the show's unique blend of surreal humor and incisive suburban satire. It is a wild and unpredictable ride, but always anchored by the excellent performances of Honig, Jouhari and Stonoha.
