Ep 6. The Wilderness

Maura is making an effort to get closer to her children and is attempting to build relationships with them. The episode begins with her and Sarah going to a wedding dress fitting, where Maura is uncomfortable with the way Sarah and her friend Tammy are talking about the LGBTQ community. She tries to explain to Sarah that being trans is not a choice but something that is innate, but Sarah is not receptive to her message.

Meanwhile, Ali has a job interview at a school, where she is asked invasive questions about her personal life and sexuality. She begins to feel uncomfortable and ends up leaving early. Later, she goes on a hike with her friend Syd, and the two of them get lost in the woods. As they wander, Ali begins to have a hallucinogenic experience and sees herself as a child, interacting with her younger self.

Josh is dealing with the aftermath of his brief relationship with Rita, who is pregnant with his child. He goes to visit Rita at her apartment, but things quickly become tense between them. Rita is more interested in getting money from Josh than having him be involved in the child's life, which upsets him.

Throughout the episode, the characters are all struggling to find their place in the world. Maura is trying to be accepted by her children for who she really is, Ali is trying to find a job where she can be herself without being judged, and Josh is trying to figure out what kind of father he wants to be. The wilderness serves as a metaphor for the characters' journeys - they are all lost in some way and unsure of how to find their way back to civilization.
