Vanguard Season 4 Episode 4 Soccer's Lost Boys

  • June 17, 2010

Soccer's Lost Boys takes a deep dive into the world of child trafficking in Ghana that often targets young boys who have a passion for soccer. The episode follows Vanguard correspondent Kaj Larsen as he investigates the issue and meets with some of these lost boys who are struggling to make it back home.

Larsen starts off in bustling Accra, where he meets with James Kofi Annan, a former child laborer who has now dedicated his life to rescuing and rehabilitating trafficked children. Through his organization Challenging Heights, Annan has rescued hundreds of children and prevented countless others from being trafficked. Larsen accompanies Annan and his team on a rescue mission, where they go undercover to a fishing village where they suspect traffickers are holding captive a group of young boys.

The next stop is a dusty town in the Northern Region, where the reality of child trafficking hits hard. Here, young boys who are trafficked from neighboring countries such as Togo and Burkina Faso are forced to work in gold mines. As Larsen walks through the town, he can see the children working in mines, carrying heavy loads and breaking rocks with rudimentary tools. He meets with the police who are working to stop trafficking, but with limited resources and manpower, they are struggling to make a significant impact.

Larsen then travels to Kumasi, the soccer capital of Ghana, to meet with families who have lost their sons to trafficking. He meets with the father of Solomon Nyantakyi, a promising young soccer player who was trafficked to Qatar with the promise of a lucrative contract. Sadly, Solomon never made it to Qatar and his family has not heard from him since. Larsen also meets with other families who have similar stories of lost sons who were lured away with the promise of a better life through soccer.

In Kumasi, Larsen also meets with coaches, scouts, and agents who are involved in Ghana's vibrant soccer scene. While many of these individuals are well-intentioned and want to help young players achieve their dreams, some are also involved in trafficking. Larsen attends a soccer match where he sees firsthand the passion and excitement that soccer brings to Ghana. He also witnesses the intense pressure that young players face to succeed, and how some may be willing to take dangerous risks to make it.

Throughout the episode, Larsen provides insightful context about the economic, social, and cultural factors that contribute to child trafficking in Ghana. He also highlights the efforts of organizations such as Challenging Heights and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to combat trafficking and provide support to victims.

Soccer's Lost Boys is a powerful and emotional episode that shines a light on a disturbing reality in Ghana and beyond. It raises important questions about the responsibilities of soccer federations, clubs, agents, and sponsors in protecting young players from exploitation. It also highlights the resilience and determination of the lost boys, who despite facing unimaginable adversity, hold on to their dreams of playing soccer.
