Melinda Monroe, or Mel, is a nurse who just lost her husband to a tragic accident. She decides to leave her old life behind and move to a small town called Virgin River to start anew. Upon arriving, things don't exactly go as planned, as the cabin she's supposed to be living in is run down and far from the idyllic retreat she had imagined. The town's bar owner, Jack, comes to her rescue and offers her a room in his place, which she reluctantly accepts.
Mel starts her new job as a nurse practitioner at a local clinic, but the first day doesn't go smoothly either. The doctor they hired to work with her didn't show up, and the office is cluttered and disorganized. It's clear this isn't going to be the easy new start Mel was hoping for. However, she's determined to make the most of her new life in Virgin River.
As she starts to settle in, Mel meets a few of the town's residents. Preacher, the local bartender and restaurant owner, is a friendly and welcoming face who tries to make Mel feel at home. Charmaine, a pregnant server at the bar, is friendly but some of her behavior (proclaiming her love for Jack in front of Mel) causes Mel to feel unsettled. Paige, one of Mel's patients and a single mom, is struggling to make ends meet and dealing with a child custody battle with her ex.
One of Mel's first patients is Jack, who she meets when he comes in with a cut on his forehead. She sees how beloved he is in the town, as several people stop by to check on him while he's being treated. It's clear to Mel that Jack is the "golden boy" in this tiny town. As they get to know each other better, Mel starts to see that Jack's life isn't as perfect as it seems. He's carrying a lot of responsibility, not just as the owner of the bar and the town's unofficial protector, but as someone dealing with personal trauma as well.
Despite the bumpy start, Mel starts to feel at home in Virgin River, even beginning to bond with Jack over their mutual desire for a fresh start. However, as she's getting comfortable in her new surroundings, she discovers something that throws her for a loop. It becomes clear that Mel is carrying her own baggage from the past and she'll have to confront it head-on if she wants to truly move forward.
"Carry On" sets up the world of Virgin River and introduces us to the key players. Mel is a relatable protagonist, dealing with loss and looking for a fresh start. Jack is a charming character whose layers are just starting to be revealed. The town itself is picturesque, but it's clear that there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. Virgin River is a show worth watching for those who crave small town drama with a big heart.
