Welcome to the N.H.K. is an anime, or Japanese animation, series that takes a look at how the pressures of a normal life can sometimes change the way a person thinks. For several years, twenty-two year old Sato Tatsuhiro has been living the life of a hikikomori, or a person who has withdrawn from any kind of social life and is gradually slipping toward self-inflicted confinement. Tatsuhiro himself can't remember why he began living a hikikomori life. However, he now believes that his problems stem from a conspiracy organization, called the Nippon Hikikomori Kyokai, or Japanese Hikikomori Association, hidden within the Nippon Hoso Kyokai, a public broadcasting system. Sato's only outside connection is to a select few friends from high school. One of these friends is Kaoru Yamazaki, a young man obsessed with anime and games. He gets Tatsuhiro heavily involved in anime. He also asks Tatsuhiro to help him create a game. Kaoru has several quirks of his own, though, that usually end up complicating his goals in life. In addition to his high school friends, Tatsuhiro also encounters a mysterious girl who claims she can change his life style. The girl, named Misaki, asks Tatsuhiro to meet her at a local park every evening. Tatsuhiro agrees and the two begin to talk about various subjects, including Tatsuhiro's conspiracy theories and his psychological issues. As the series progresses, Tatsuhiro and Misaki form a close friendship. However, because neither of them is actually very good at expressing themselves, their true feelings towards each other are not easily revealed. As Tatsuhiro begins to experience more of the world around him, he begins to see himself and his friends, including Misaki, in a totally different way.

When he divulges to her that he's a recluse, she tells him she knows someone who can help cure his problem.
