In season 1, episode 2 of White Rabbit Project titled “Jailbreak,” hosts Grant Imahara, Tory Belleci and Kari Byron are on a mission to test if escaping from prison is really as easy as it seems in movies.
The trio examines classic prison escape scenes from movies such as “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Escape from Alcatraz,” and “Escape Plan,” to determine if the scenarios presented in these films were realistic or just wishful thinking. They dive deep into the science behind each scenario and investigate the plausibility of each escape attempt through various experiments and simulations.
First, they look at “The Shawshank Redemption” and the iconic scene where Andy Dufresne crawls through a sewage pipe to escape the prison. To test this, the White Rabbit team creates a similar pipe in their laboratory and challenges Tory to crawl through it. They also test if crawling through sewage pipes is actually possible and if it can lead to freedom.
Next, they examine “Escape from Alcatraz,” where prisoners are seen crafting tools out of everyday objects to escape the notorious prison. The team tries to replicate these tools, such as a spoon-turned-chisel, and then tests them on a wall similar to the one in Alcatraz. They also analyze the likelihood of inmates being able to build such tools without being noticed by the guards.
Finally, they take a look at “Escape Plan,” a movie that showcases an escape made possible by a prisoner’s knowledge of software and computer technology. The team takes a trip to the National Cybersecurity Center to learn more about the software used by correctional facilities and if it is possible for a prisoner to hack it and escape.
Throughout the episode, the White Rabbit team consults experts in criminal justice, former inmates, and prison staff to gain insight into the reality of prison escapes. They also share fun trivia bits and interesting historical information about the prisons they investigate.
Overall, “Jailbreak” is an entertaining and informative episode that explores the feasibility of classic prison escape scenarios. It combines science, history, and pop culture to create a unique and engaging viewing experience for fans of the true crime genre.
