Ep 2. Comfort

Ryan is feeling deep remorse after having broke up with his girlfriend Amanda, and he starts to experience mental breakdowns. In an attempt to heal himself, he decides to seek comfort from his neighbor's dog Wilfred, who he still sees as a human dressed in a dog suit. Wilfred helps him with his emotional crisis by encouraging him to let go of his fantasies, and move on from Amanda. On the other hand, his sister Kristen is having problems with her husband Drew, after he reveals that he’s been keeping a secret from her for years. He admits to her that he cheated on a test when he was in medical school, which has been haunting him for years. Kristen is furious and she can’t trust him anymore. Drew begs for her forgiveness and tries to explain that he’s always been a good husband, but Kristen is too deeply hurt to listen.

Meanwhile, Ryan along with his sister, and her husband Drew, attend a dinner party thrown by their high-school friend Spencer. Spencer lives in a mansion that is too exotic, and it seems like he’s living the life they all want for themselves. All his guests come to the party in fancy attire except Ryan who wears jogging pants. He's clearly not impressed with all the show off and pretense. Spencer introduces them to his new girlfriend, which does not appear to make Drew or Kristen happy. Ryan, who is still grieving the loss of his relationship with Amanda, feels like an outsider and bursts out at Spencer's girlfriend. He tells her that she’s not Spencer's type, and he's only dating her because she looks like his ex-girlfriend. This does not go down well with anyone at the party. Later in the evening, Ryan and Wilfred sneak into Spencer's bedroom and rip apart his stuffed animals, to get back at him for how he’s been acting towards them. However, Spencer catches them in the act and gets extremely angry.

The next day, Ryan is still feeling the after-effects of the party. He's been keeping up a pretense that he is over Amanda and ready to move on, even though he's still in love with her. Wilfred, the dog, suggests that they head to the beach, and spend the day relaxing and having fun. Ryan agrees, and they spend the day surfing, playing in the sand, and flying kites. Ryan is starting to feel like himself again but when he returns home, he realizes that he's left his kite on the beach. This sends him spiraling back into his depression, and he starts to have hallucinations about Amanda. Wilfred tries to snap him out of it, but Ryan is too deep in his emotions. It turns out that Amanda is back in town, and Ryan finally confronts her about their relationship. She reveals that she's dating someone new, which sends Ryan over the edge. Wilfred tries to help him by pushing him to focus on things he can control, and to stop obsessing over Amanda. He even convinces Ryan to destroy his old kite, which is a symbol of his unhealthy past with Amanda.

The episode ends with Ryan burning down his tree-house, which he built with Amanda, as a way of letting go of his past. He finally accepts that he can't change what has happened, and he needs to move forward with his life. He also apologizes to Wilfred for using him as a crutch and realizes that he can’t keep living in his own fantasy. The episode shows how important it is to confront your emotions and past, and to seek support in people that care about you. It also emphasizes the idea of acceptance, and how coming to terms with the things that are out of your control, can ultimately bring about a sense of peace and healing.
