For over a decade, Yates preyed on vulnerable women- mostly prostitutes and drug addicts- in Spokane, Washington. He would lure them into his car, take them to a secluded area, and shoot them. In total, he killed 13 women between 1975 and 1998.

Yates' crimes were particularly horrifying because he was able to blend into society so well. He had a stable job as a helicopter pilot and a loving family. But at night, he would drive around in his van looking for his next victim. It wasn't until 1998 when he was caught soliciting a prostitute that police were able to link him to the murders.
The episode also explores the devastating impact Yates' crimes had on the families of his victims. We hear from a woman whose sister was killed by Yates and learn about how she coped with the tragedy. We also hear from the daughter of a woman who was killed by Yates while she was pregnant, and how she struggled to come to terms with the loss of both her mother and brother.
As the episode progresses, we see how police were eventually able to catch Yates. Through forensic evidence, they were able to link the murders to him and eventually obtain a confession. In court, Yates was sentenced to death.
