John Dutton and his family are in a constant battle to defend their ranch, the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, from outside forces that threaten their way of life. In episode 4 of Yellowstone, titled The Long Black Train, John faces pressure from all sides.

The episode begins with a shocking scene as a train crashes into a herd of cattle on John's ranch, killing many of them. Throughout the episode, the theme of loyalty is explored. The characters are fiercely loyal to their family and their way of life, and they will do whatever it takes to protect it. John, Beth, and Kayce all face difficult choices that test their loyalty, but they ultimately stay true to their roots.
