The storyline revolves around a family living in an isolated area of Montana. As a retired colonel, William Ludlow, played by Anthony Hopkins, decides to move and build a ranch on the woodland areas of Montana with his family after getting sick of the corruption and deceitfulness of the U.S. government committed on the native Americans. Living with him is his wife, three sons, a native American friend named One Stab, a hired helper named Decker, and Decker's native American wife Pet and their daughter Isabel.
Ludlow's wife is unable to cope to the harsh winter season on the ranch and decides to relocate to the East Coast, leaving him in charge of their three sons. Alfred, played by Adian Quinn, is the eldest among the three and is characterized as the responsible and cautious one. Meanwhile, Tristan, played by Brad Pitt, is the middle and is wild, carefree, and well-practiced in American Indian culture. Their youngest brother is Samuel, a brave, educated, yet naive individual.
After graduating Harvard, Samuel returns home to their ranch accompanied by his soon-to-be wife, Susannah Fincannon. Immediately, she is attracted by Tristan, yet loves Samuel. Before they are wedded, Samuel decides to join the Canadian Expedition Force to support the British troops in battling the German army. Though displeased and reluctant, their father is unable to stop Samuel from leaving. To make sure Samuel is able to return home safe, Alfred and Tristan also enlist in the army.
During WWI, the brothers are assigned in the 10th Battalion, CEF. Alfred is delegated as officer and leads an attack into no man's land. Meanwhile, Tristan leaves his unit to look after Samuel. Unfortunately, due to the naiveté and stubbornness of Samuel, he gets himself killed as Tristan runs to save him.
